Nature & Grounds

Follow the paths. Experience a landscape that changes how you see the observatory and the space around it.

Move Through the Grounds

From the moment you arrive, the grounds guide how you move, where you go, and what you notice along the way.

Follow the Paths

Walk along Olmsted-designed routes that guide you through open lawn, wooded areas, and restored prairie.

Notice What Changes

Light shifts across the lake. Trees and prairie change with the seasons. Each visit looks a little different.

Take Your Time

On the grounds, there’s no set route or pace. You can move slowly, stop where you want, and spend as much time as you need.

See It In Context

The grounds are part of the experience. They shape what you see, how you move, and how the observatory feels.

Grounds and gardens at Yerkes Observatory

Historic Landscape

Designed by Olmsted

The grounds at Yerkes were shaped in part by the Olmsted firm, led by Frederick Law Olmsted, whose work includes Central Park and the U.S. Capitol Grounds. Known for designing landscapes that feel natural while guiding how people move through them, their approach is reflected at Yerkes in the open views, connected paths, and the way each area leads naturally into the next.
