Y.O. Speaker Series: Dr. Amanda Bauer Talks Cosmic Vertigo
Yerkes’ own Dr. Amanda Bauer guides us through Cosmic Vertigo, that dizzying feeling that comes from trying to grasp the incomprehensible scales of space and time. Come hear Amanda discuss her career in astronomy, her life at Yerkes, and how to find the wow in the everyday world on Thursday, June 12th at 6pm.
Dr. Bauer is the Deputy Director and Head of Science & Education at Yerkes Observatory. Her position is sponsored by the Montgomery Foundation. She began at Yerkes in 2022 becoming the first woman ever to lead the astronomy mission in Yerkes’ 130 year history of noteworthy leaders in this field. After growing up in the Midwest, Amanda received her PhD in Astrophysics from the University of Texas at Austin studying how galaxies form, live their lives, and evolve into the diverse array of galaxy species we see today. Her career has allowed her to live overseas and use some of the world’s largest telescopes. She was previously the Deputy Director of Operations for the Vera C. Rubin Observatory, a huge new telescope that will open its eyes on the universe later this year. She was named one of Australia’s Top 5 Under 40 Researchers and Science Communicators in 2016.
