A Shell in the Sky Art Exhibit Ceremonial Opening
A Shell in the Sky | Midewigaan Miigis is an immersive exhibition of Anishinaabe art, star knowledge, and living culture curated by Noelia Cruz alongside the artists. Centering the collective wisdom of distinguished elders, artists, cultural teachers, authors, and knowledge keepers, this collaborative exhibition invites visitors to learn from and with the stars through stories that have been tended on these lands since time immemorial.
Join us for the opening Ceremony on Saturday, June 6 at 6 p.m. The Ceremony will be guided by esteemed elder, author, and star knowledge keeper Bwaananaabekwe Mary Moose and Mishiikenh Abraham Sutherland, followed by a keynote focusing on Star Knowledge and Cultural Teachings and an artist panel led by the curator.
Following the keynote and artists panel, visitors are invited to experience Anishinaabe astronomy across multiple mediums. Basketry, beading, visual arts, performing arts, NSTEAM, and astrophotography will be represented. Each reflects the deep interconnections between land stewardship, water-sky relationships, language, and culture. This is made possible through the generosity of the Council of the Three Fires: Ojibwe, Odawa, and Bodéwadmi.
